The Reasons Why Craig is the Premiere Charter Fishing Destination:

  • Directly in the King Salmon migration route on the outer coast of Prince Wales where many runs of king salmon stop and feed.

  • Hands-on fishing with trophy potential.

  • Largest coho hatchery in the world.

  • Both protected and open water fishing.

  • Excellent fishing for halibut. No restricted areas for halibut fishing.

  • No cruise ships visit our area.

  • Very reasonable-sized charter fleet for the amount of fish in our area.

Hands down, the Noyes Island area on the west coast of Prince of Wales is the best saltwater fishing in Alaska. Due to our close proximity to the outer coast and a mixed stock fishery, we have consistent, good fishing for salmon, halibut, and bottom fish.  The town of Craig is the gateway to fishing the Noyes Island area.  Craig is one of the last unspoiled fishing towns left in Southeast Alaska.  Not only will  you experience world class fishing, you will also get to experience Alaska free of cruise ships and mass tourism.  Anglers travel from around the world to experience the salmon, halibut, and lingcod fishing that are in our waters.

Alaska Wide Open Charters is a small, locally owned and operated by Joel and Leanne Steenstra.  Captain Joel,  a well-respected, top producing guide out of the Craig area that has logged over 1000 guide days out of the Craig area.  This means that Captain Joel has fished in virtually in type of weather conditions and fish abundance which really stacks the odds in your favor of having a great fish catching trip. Not only is Captain Joel very knowledgeable and experienced in the area, he also networks daily on the water with other top producing guides to ensure he knows exactly what is going on up and down the coast.

Alaska Wide Open offers fishing packages for groups of three to four fishermen.  The Blue Heron Inn which handles the majority of our lodging is on pilings overlooking the harbor where the boat is moored.    We strive to remain affordable while providing world-class fishing at a level that most cannot duplicate.  We look forward to earning your repeat business and showing you how good the fishing is in our area.
